Part II Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October 11, 2012

And, a good evening to you, Readers!  It's been a busy day and, I must say, I am exhausted!!

This morning, Sadie and Toby were barking up a storm at the french doors of the cottage.  I went to see what they were fussing about and it was Mr. Squirrel.  I stood at the door watching him, dig in the dirt then start to play with the little windmill that my friend Etta gave me.  I grabbed my camera and got some fun shots of him playing around the big tree.

My friends, Beverly and Don, offered their truck and assistance in going over to the storage place and hauling back boxes, tubs, and furniture.  It took us six trips but it's here in the driveway!!  Still have to find someone to move the refrigerator and bookcase.  Don wanted to move them and I said, "Absolutely not!!"  Anyway, now the fun starts of unpacking the tubs and boxes and getting things set up for the garage sale on Saturday.  The college was nice enough to lend me some six foot tables so hopefully I can get those tomorrow morning and start setting up.  Last time I had a garage sale, people started stopping by the night before so I need to be prepared.

Tonight is the vice presidential debate between Vice President Joe Biden and Paul Ryan.  I thoroughly enjoyed the last debate and am looking forward to this one as well.  Joe Biden is always entertaining to listen to ... so often, he opens his mouth and inserts his foot.  I think it's going to be a good debate ~~ I'll be ready with my popcorn and Coke Zero!

Yesterday, I blogged about Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  While I worked at a local dating service, one of the managers was beaten by her husband.  I gasped when I saw her when she came back to work.  She nearly died she was beaten so severely.  One of her coworkers found her unconscious at her home ... he said that her bedroom looked like a massacre had taken place there was so much blood.

I talked with her and gave her the name and number of the shelters in Collin County and in Dallas County.  She thanked me but said that she had talked things over with her husband and that they would be fine.  FINE???  She had a broken nose, a broken arm, broken ribs, cuts that needed stiches on her head, arms, legs, and face ... two black eyes and bruises covering her entire body.  From what I heard, this was the third time that this had happened.

I was on the speaker's forum for the shelter in Collin County for a year.  The first group I spoke to was a men's group at a church.  I was surprised at how eager they were to learn more about domestic violence and what it entailed.  We also talked about how churches often overlook the violence going on under their noses.  Why is it so tough to confront when this is going on?  I encouraged them to get involved in fund raising for the shelter and to be alert to the signs that something is amiss in couples within their church.

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.~~Ephesians 4:29-32

In the stillness of the night, there is a lady laying curled up in her bed with her eye on the door... on her behalf and on behalf of all who are being abused physically, mentally, or spiritually, please join me in supporting your local shelter.  The women and children who reside there need you!!

Always remember you are loved and prayed for ... YA YOU!!

Miss Dottie

PS  Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.~~James 1:19-20

  1. It's wonderful to hear that men were interested in learning about domestic violence. You are using life experience to benefit other--yeah! Also, I am sure there are men that are abused as well.

Good luck with the garage sale! I hope you make lots of $$. Hopefully the squirrels don't run away with any of your items. (He! He!)

    Love You,
    Jane
